Capcom has revealed that Devil May Cry 5 was born out of fan demand, specifically those who enjoyed the first three games in the stylish demon-slaying franchise.
Speaking with GI.biz, Capcom marketing boss Antoine Molant acknowledged that the hack-‘n-slash genre may not have the same pulling power as it used, but that didn’t stop them from giving it a go.
Having said that, it seems DmC wasn’t particularly popular among fans despite it being, you know, a great game.
As such, it was perhaps inevitable that DMC5 is more in line with Devil May Cry 1-3 than Ninja Theory’s 2013 effort.
‘The last game was very good, but there were a few unhappy voices because it wasn’t a direct sequel and other things. Because of that, the dev team sat down and asked: “Where do we take that next?” And it was known that the community wanted Devil May Cry 5 to be closer to 1, 2 and 3. And so the project was born.’
‘We can debate whether that genre has the same appeal as it used to… that’s hard to say. The project was born because of what the fans want.’
Despite this, Molant noted that Devil May Cry 5 would have never gotten off the ground if it ‘didn’t make sense business-wise.’
Regardless of which side of the fence you sit (old Dante or nu-Dante), one thing’s for sure: Devil May Cry 5 will be the prettiest entry to date, and will feature some jaw-dropping facial animations. That’s at least what Capcom is hoping for, anyway.
Devil May Cry 5 will launch for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One by the end of March 2019.
