I work in a factory, in the shipping department, and I "used to" wear earphones (in one ear only) when I work as the music kept my motivation up and would keep my loading my trucks in time. I was told that it is against health and safety rules, and some of the H&S rules make sense, and other are totally arbitrary and clearly meant to control for the sake of control.
I say this because the shipping cooler that I work in allows (and encourages) the use of ear defenders, so how is it that ear plugs/defenders blocking sound from both ears is totally fine but music in one ear at low volume is a straight up no-no?
I was even told that it's because listening to music will stop you from hearing equipment warnings/horns, but again, ear defenders aren't an issue?
Is it just control or is there a logical answer?
