The two teams that played in the 2010 BCS National Championship have scheduled a home-and-home series.
I’m not positive if Nick Saban will be around for the games, but Alabama and Texas have scheduled a home-and-home series for 2022 and 2023.
The blue blood programs will meet for the first time since the Crimson Tide beat Colt McCoy and the Longhorns in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game. The first game between the two teams will be in Austin on Sept. 10, 2022, with the second game taking place in Tuscaloosa on Sept. 9, 2023.
I’m really excited to see these two programs meet again on the gridiron. Texas is beginning to get back toward their winning ways under second-year head coach Tom Herman and I don’t need to remind anyone how dominant Alabama has been since Saban came to town.
Now whether he’ll still be patrolling the sidelines for Alabama come 2022 and 2023 remains to be seen, but he’ll turn 67 on Oct. 31 this year so there’s a strong possibility he’ll have retired by then. But if he has, something tells me there will be a special appearance by the greatest college football coach of all time to commemorate the 2010 national title.
“We’re thrilled to be able to add another incredible non-conference opponent with the University of Texas for a home-and-home series,” said Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne, via the school’s official website. “It’s been nearly 100 years since Alabama has visited Austin and over a century since the Longhorns have traveled to Tuscaloosa, so we’re looking forward to it. This will certainly be a great opportunity for our program and our fans.”
I think this is really great, not just for Alabama and Texas fans, but for all of college football. These are the type of nonconference matchups fans are dying to see to begin the season. Fans don’t want to see powerhouse programs scheduling cupcakes they’ll paste 69-7 which amounts to a glorified scrimmage to ease into the season.
This will be one of the most-watched games of the year for the two years they’ll meet and I hope it encourages other programs of their caliber to find a spot on their future schedules to schedule a marquee matchup.
“The Crimson Tide and Longhorns have played a lot of memorable games over the years and the addition of this home-and-home series will be great for not only our fans, but fans of college football,” Saban said via Alabama’s website.
The fans need this and it’s beneficial for the teams to boost their strength of schedule to help present their best case possible for the fickle College Football Playoff committee that changes their metrics every year to see who plays for the national title.
