J. Cole did the surprise album announcement thing on Monday and Twitter felt all kinds of ways about it.
It might not seem like it, but it’s been a minute since J. Cole had a new album out. His last full-length work, 4 Your Eyez Only, dropped in early December of 2016, which isn’t long ago by many artists’ standards but seems like it for J. Cole.
In any case, he hadn’t revealed anything new was in the works. But then all in one day, his fans got a mystery concert/event in New York City …
… which was announced like this …
… and then the reveal that his new album, KOD, is on the way on Friday.
According to XXL, those two things are related, in the sense that people in NYC who went to the event got to hear the whole new album ahead of time.
While details regarding the project are obviously incredibly scarce, a number of fans claim to have been present at Gramercy Theatre early today and heard the entire project in one setting.
On top of that, MissInfo reports that the album has three different subtitles and suggests that there are 12 songs on it.
According to the Dreamville MC, the 12-track album carries three different subtitles (Kidz On Drugz, King Overdose, Kill Our Demonz) and it was recorded in two weeks. K.O.D. is J. Cole’s first album since 2016’s platinum-selling 4 Your Eyez Only.
Naturally, Twitter had all kinds of things to say about a new, surprise J. Cole joint.
Many people noted that Drake announced his new album was coming in June, making this an all-around good day for hip hop fans. Still, Friday is a lot closer than Sunday, and by the weekend, we won’t be able to say J. Cole hasn’t had anything new out in a bit.
